Competition season is upon us again with several clubs hosting various open competitions. The Sundays Well Vets competition was run over a few days at the end of last week. Congratulations to Maggie and John, Diana Fawsitt and Brenda Crowley who all made it to semifinals.
Therese and Paraic represented Bandon in Kinsale’s annual Bulman Cup last Sunday. They were narrowly defeated in the semi finals. Conditions were poor for playing with gale force winds all day.
Bishopstown Open kicks off on Sunday with several Bandon entries. Best of luck to all!
The draw for our own May Doubles will be available soon. Players will have to arrange their own matches and demand for courts is always high near finals night so get playing ASAP!

The Club AGM was held last Tues night in the Clubhouse. Fifteen members attended. Maggie reported that it was a successful year tennis wise for the club. She thanked our sponsors for their support over the past year. She also thanked the members for efforts made especially during our open week. Major projects completed this year included installation of the shed, purchase of the lawnmower and clubhouse painting.
Niall reported that club finances are in a healthy state. Membership subs will remain the same for the coming year. Susan displayed the new club gear, now available for purchase.
A new committee was voted in. Maggie is now club president with Paraic taking over as chairperson. John continues as captain and Susan is the new vice captain. Therese, Jenny and Jo have joined the committee and Maggie thanked departing committee members Eileen, Tish and Lisa for their work on committee over the last few years.
Winter League Finals will be held in Sundays Well on Sunday 1st April. First rounds of the Spring League are underway. Bandon entered a team in Div A (G1, G2,G3) with Diana as team captain, and a team in Div B (G4,5,6) with Susan as team captain. Both teams were in action Friday night. Diana’s team were at home and despite very close matches were beaten 3/0. Susan’s team were away to Crosshaven and were unfortunate to be beaten 3/0. Hopefully both teams will have better luck next time out.

The Grade 4 team consisting of Therese, Lisa, Andy and Will travelled to Monaleen in Limerick on Sunday to play their knockout match. Monaleen fielded a strong team and Bandon were beaten 3/1. Well done Therese and Will!
Stan’s Grade 2 team was at home to Rushbrooke on Sunday morning and despite good games lost the fixture 1/4.
Jenny’s Grade 4 team was at home to a very strong Douglas team on Thursday night and unfortunately was beaten 0/4.
Ivan’s Grade 6 team was away to Whitechurch and lost 1/3.
The Grade 5s and Grade 3s will play their last matches next weekend. The 5s play Douglas at home and the 3s will be away to Lower Aghada.
It’s now a case of counting points gathered all season to decide which teams go through to knockout. It was a very good season with excellent tennis played at all grades. The club fielded six teams in all, some achievement for such a small club.

Paraic’s Grade 3 team (Paraic, Brian, Tish, Tara) was at home to Sundays Well, and despite fighting a hard battle, had a 5/0 loss. The score didn’t reflect the tennis as several of the games were very close. Hard luck
John’s Grade 5 team (John, Ger, Susan, Julie) travelled to Canon Hayes Club in Co. Tipperary. They had a very good day out and came home with a 3/1 victory. They were unlucky not to bag the fourth point. Well done!
Courts are booked for Thursday 2nd Feb from 7.30 to 11.30pm for a Grade 4 Winter league match against Douglas. The courts are also booked from 11.00am to 3.00pm on Sunday 5th for a Grade 2 match against Rushbrooke. Best of luck to the home teams!
Bandon Tennis Clubs Valentines Tournament is scheduled for Thursday February 9th. The format is mixed doubles with a sliding handicap. There will be a draw for partners on the night. Open to members only.
